Facts:
After ten years without giving workers a raise, Congress passed legislation last year that increases the minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25 an hour (in three steps over two years) BUT NOT ALL KANSANS ARE COVERED BY THE FEDERAL LAW? At least 17,000 workers, according to the Kansas Department of Labor. In February 2007, and again in 2008, the Kansas legislature rejected bills to raise the state minimum wage above $2.65. In fact, Kansas hasn't raised its state minimum wage rate in 20years (since 1988). About 300,000 Kansans are living in poverty (about 12.5% of the state population) Raising wages not only benefits workers directly - it also makes smart economic sense for businesses, small and large, AND it benefits local economies. There is ample evidence for this.

Kansas workers that are not covered by the federal minimum wage:

Workers whose employers gross under $500,000 annually and don’t produce for interstate commerce

Childcare workers

Companions for the elderly and infirm

Farm workers whose employers use under 500 person-days of farm labor per year

People who work for certain small newspapers

People who work for certain amusement and recreational firms

Since the Kansas legislature has resisted raising the minimum wage, it's up to cities to do the right thing. That's why Kansas Action Network is organizing a grassroots coalition in a campaign to raise the wage floor by city ordinance in Wichita, Topeka, and Kansas City, KS.

Kansas Action Network, Inc. is a broad based coalition for workers' rights, social justice and economic fairness seeking a common ground in the pursuit of a just society. www.ksactionnet.org or www.raisethewagekansas.org
